"The purpose of the School is not the transmission of knowledge, the transmission of knowledge is only a means; it is rather the formation of people whom we will call autonomous, able to live in a democratic society ". (Meirieu, Philippe, 1995)
Our school aims to guarantee the right to equal opportunities in school access and success. Its primary objective is to ensure the discovery and development of interests and aptitudes, capacity for reasoning, critical memory, creativity, moral aesthetic, promoting an individual achievement in harmony with the values of the society in which it is inserted.
We benefit from financial support and financial assistance from the State on the basis of the Development Contracts, the pre-school, and the Simple Contracts for Basic Education.
THE SCHOOL IS NOT ONLY THE PLACE WHERE YOU LEARN TO READ AND WRITE
Aware that the activities of the curricular complement create in the student the pleasure of being in the school, they favor socialization, through the articulation with the different curricular areas, and they provide to young people knowledge that the curricular subjects do not provide them, Externato bets on these extra activities -curricular.

Educational Project
The School Education Project is "an integral proposal that allows coherent management of the process of educational intervention in a school institution". (Antunez, S. et al, 1994: 20).
It is a development and change instrument that is intended to be workable and functional, so that the desired results can be achieved during its period of validity. Increasingly, the School is confronted with a heterogeneous "school population", with needs to respond immediately to the problems that arise.
The School has, therefore, a much more demanding social role: in addition to "reading, writing and counting", it is today the space par excellence for the socialization of children. Effectively, with the development of the information society and the diffusion of new technologies, it is no longer the only source of knowledge and knowledge production.
Thus, we feel it is a necessity to put our students to think about everything that involves them, to discover the appropriate strategies to solve problematic situations and to learn from all these teachings.
Rules of Procedure
The Poet is an inclusive school and we favor active, meaningful, diversified, integrated and socializing learning situations.
We are committed to Citizenship Education, aiming at the development of civic awareness of students as a fundamental element in the process of forming responsible, critical, active and intervening citizens, with the possibility, inter alia, of exchanging experiences and individual participation in the life of the class, school and community.

The Externato
Since 1951 to promote excellence in education
The school was founded on September 20, 1951, by the Decree No. 1140, passed by the Ministry of National Education. It was, at the beginning, a college belonging to Maria Joana de Deus Ramos, daughter of the poet and pedagogue João de Deus. For this reason, the school followed, and follows, in the learning of reading, the methodology that it implemented.
He began his activity in the parish of Camões, under the name «João Educativo João de Deus - Externato Feminino». He changed ownership and facilities in 1964 and, a year later, he settled in his current address - Alameda das Linhas de Torres. In September 1972 he was authorized to teach children's education in a co-education system and on December 6, 1973, primary education was allowed (also in co-education) to be called "João Educativo Home - Externato »
On May 30, 1975, he assumed his current name - Externato "O Poeta", in honor of Mestre João de Deus.
